What We Do

At Reason Alliance, we provide grants for activities that promote pluralism, support reproductive rights for women, protect children from abuse at school, and otherwise defend the unfairly or unjustly marginalized. We have been involved in a number of good causes, including taking a stand against the extremist Westboro Baptist Church.

We are currently providing support in two projects:

Access to Abortion Services

We are supporting The Satanic Temple in two lawsuits against the state of Missouri. The lawsuits were filed in both state and federal court on behalf of Mary Doe, a pregnant woman seeking an abortion. Missouri law requires that all women seeking to lawfully terminate their pregnancy must be given reading material claiming that life begins at conception, and they must endure a 72-hour waiting period between their initial appointment and their actual abortion procedure. Like The Satanic Temple, we object to these requirements on the religious grounds that they infringe upon our belief in the inviolability of the body.

Lawsuits such as these represent much more than just the impact on one woman. These requirements place clinics in danger of closure and make it difficult, sometimes even impossible, for women to obtain abortions. When lawsuits are successful, they eliminate restrictive regulations that have no medical grounds and show other states that victory is possible.

Abuse in Public Schools

The Protect Children Project enables students to object to abuse, including corporal punishment, solitary confinement, restraint, and bathroom deprivation. The program offers First Amendment protection for children in public schools to prevent mental and physical abuse by teachers and administrators.

Corporal punishment is still legal in 19 states, leading to the legal abuse of more than 200,000 children every year. In addition, thousands of children are placed in solitary confinement and denied access to the bathroom in all 50 states. These are violations of human rights and of core values which assert that the body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.
